Offered six days a week, March through November (weather permitting), these exciting classes give participants a chance to hand-milk a Jersey cow, gather eggs from the chicken coop, groom a draft horse, help with afternoon chores and more. Due to the popularity of our drop-in classes, they are first-come, first served, and space is limited. We suggest you arrive at least 15 minutes early to register.
Participants, ages 15 & under, must be accompanied by an adult. Not sure who qualifies as a participant? If you’re hoping to ask questions and try your hand at any of the hands-on activities, you count as a participant and should pay the associated fee. Participants of all ages are welcome! If you’re only supervising a child and do not plan to actively participate yourself, you’re not required to pay the fee. If your child declines to participate after registration, then you may take their place. No refunds will be issued for drop-in classes.

* The St. Charles Park District seasons are as follows: Winter – January 1 to March 31, Spring – April 1 to May 31, Summer – June 1 to August 31, Fall – September 1 to December 31. Please note, however, that Primrose Fall drop-in programs conclude prior to the end of the standard Fall season. Hands-On Milking ends the last Wednesday or Saturday in October and the other three drop-in programs end the last Wednesday or Saturday in November.
Spend your morning with the Primrose cows! Meet these lovely ladies and discover what goes into dairying – the breeding, raising and milking of dairy animals. Then get up close and personal with one of the ‘fresh’ cows and try your hand at milking.
Chicken & Egg:
See, hear and touch the Columbian Wyandotte chickens that call Primrose home and help gather farm fresh eggs straight from the nest. All pickers take home a share of the eggs collected!
Hold Your Horses:
Crazy about horses? Here’s your chance to mingle with some gentle giants – the Primrose Farm Belgian draft horses. Explore basic grooming techniques and learn about equine care practices. Do you have a child who would prefer a smaller animal? We can groom our donkeys or goats as well.
Feed The Animals:
Please feed the animals! It’s not often that you’ll hear this said to visitors at a farm. Get a unique, behind the scenes opportunity to help care for the farm’s residents. Interact with the various livestock and discover how their specialized diets vary throughout the year.
Feed The Goats:
Get up close and personal with goats! Stop by the office for a feeding stick and some delicious goat treats, and you will be on your way.
Feed The Chickens:
Great for young children to get hands-on experience! Stop by the office to pick up a feeding stick and marvel as the chickens flock to you and your feed.
Please note – most drop-in programs will not be cancelled due to weather. Instead, farmers will make necessary accommodations in an effort to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants. We do reserve the right to cancel due to extreme weather including but not limited to snowstorms, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. We also cancel drop-in classes when they conflict with special events or livestock needs.
If you’re driving in from any distance or planning your day around a particular program, please call in advance to confirm that the drop-in class will be offered.
