A visit to Primrose Farm is an opportunity to experience day-to-day aspects of 150 years of Fox Valley farm life. Our 100+ acres provide the perfect pastoral oasis for modern city and suburban families. Escape into the rural past with us!
Our grounds open daily at dawn so you can start your day with a sunrise walk through our historic and modern agricultural landscapes. Head down to Otter Creek to see the beavers and keep your eyes peeled for our resident Sandhill Cranes. By the time you get back to the farmyard, roosters will be crowing and the Primrose farmers will be doling out breakfast rations to hungry horses, cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. Stick around to watch us hand-milk our Jersey cows or sign-up for a drop-in class and try it yourself.
Stay through the afternoon and interpreters will bring history to life before your eyes. Interact with and observe farmers as they complete a variety of daily and seasonal farm chores with both period and modern equipment. If you’re lucky, you may just catch them processing grain into livestock feed, loading hay into the mow, caring for our fruit orchard, separating cream and making butter, cleaning out the feedlot with a tractor, cooking on the woodstove, or tending the kitchen garden.
Even on the quieter days when farmers are between seasonal tasks, you can always greet and visit with the animals that call Primrose home. Scratch a cow behind the ears and she’ll be your lifelong friend. Say “hello” to a draft horse and he’s likely to respond with a whiny or a head bob. Crow at a rooster and he just may crow back.
When your day is nearly spent and the sunlight is waning, snuggle close to someone you love and watch the sunset over the fields. The stars will be laid out above you and the fireflies will dance around. Plus, on select evenings, Primrose stays open after dusk to allow special guests to see the farmyard lit with lamplight during programs like the Swing into Summer Barn Dance, Night at the Mooovies, Moonlight Hayrides and Winter on the Farm.
